20 Songs: A Tribute to Teen Angst

As we usher in the new and throw out the old, with promises of fulfilling resolutions only to abandon them 2 weeks (or days) later, maybe the old does not have to be all that bad. Keyword: maybe. Today, we’re throwing back to some high-school emo music.

The Killers – “Mr. Brightside”

Well, obviously.

Paramore – “Ignorance”

I think everyone I went to high school with had a crush on Hayley Williams at some point in their lives.

30 Seconds to Mars – “The Kill”

Jared Leto isn’t just Joker, you know.

My Chemical Romance – “Welcome to the Black Parade”

I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that they’ve disbanded. Denial? Who is she?

Linkin Park – “Numb”

Does anyone else cry over the fact that they’ll never see Chester Bennington live? Asking for a friend.

While we’re here, a note to all of our friends who battle with their inner demons everyday: you are loved.

Evanescence – “My Immortal”

Throwback to me crying over my mans who wasn’t even my mans.

Bon Jovi – “It’s My Life”

Throwback to me locking myself up when amma wouldn’t get me a Motorola flip phone.

My Chemical Romance – “I’m Not Okay”

Cue visuals of me upping the volume to this as I type “I’m ok” to the query “How are you doing?”

The All-American Rejects – “It Ends Tonight”

IDK if this makes me want to scream, laugh and cry simultaneously.

Fall Out Boy – “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs”

if u cn rd ths cngrtlns yu r clvr

All Time Low – “I Feel Like Dancin’”

This was playing in my head as I finished my last SPM paper.

Pierce The Veil – “Caraphernelia”

I told my high school mates about PTV and they returned to school next day with faces of disgust but whatever.

We The Kings – “Check Yes Juliet”

My 15-year-old self just wanted to go on a damn holiday with my crush????

Mayday Parade – “Miserable at Best”

Avenged Sevenfold – “Dear God”

I’M SORRY A7X JUST NEEDS TO BE HERE.

Aerosmith – “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing”

Fact: I listened to this on my Nokia slide phone everyday for like 5 months.

Nickelback – “How You Remind Me”

Green Day – “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”

Simple Plan – “Perfect”

Theme song for family functions when they find out you are not a STEM major.

Papa Roach – “Scars”

So many songs, so little time. Some honourable mentions:

  • My Chemical Romance – “Teenagers”
  • Pan!c at the Disco – “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”
  • Blacklisted Me – “Reprobate Romance”
  • Tonight Alive – “The Other Side”
  • Wheatus – “Teenage Dirtbag”

What are some other “emo” songs you remember bobbing your head to back in high school? Let us know!
