Flash Game Review: Earth Taken & Don’t Escape 3

This article reviews 2 popular flash games: Earth Taken and Don’t Escape 3.  Generally, a flash game is a computer game that is played over the Internet. This article will reviews the games based on the following 3 criteria; Gameplay, Graphics and Storyline.

 

Earth Taken

Gameplay:

The game is a 2D platform action adventure which means it involves a lot of shooting, running and jumping around. However, unlike traditional platformer games, Earth Taken feature little puzzle solving elements and focuses extensively on the world itself, making it very immersive for an adventure game. Each “Chapter” of the game includes an objective for the player. Due to the game’s post-apocalyptic survivor action, health and ammo count is crucial to the game. In order to challenge the player, the game has an oxygen meter indicated at the top right that would decrease periodically as the player ventures into the city. “Food” would be both an in game currency as well as item that the player will use in order to replenish their lost health.

Survivors can be found in levels that are a great addition to your firepower, but are susceptible to receiving damage and therefore would die. Rescuing survivors or discovering secrets would not change much aspect of the game but will reward you with an Achievement at the end of the game. The game would expect the players to make certain decisions when it comes to defeating an enemy; it could be a direct assault, stealth kills or even using the environment such as cars to create an explosion that would result in an instant death.

Graphics:

Due to the game mechanic of being a 2D platform, the graphics are mainly focuses on subtle things such as shadowing and lighting rather than detailed backgrounds or characters. Although not drawn in much detail, characters are quite distinguishable from one another based on their facial features as well as their clothing.

Storyline:

The first Chapter

Earth Taken shows the aftermath of an alien invasion that occurred overnight. With the spread of some sort of airborne poison, it is impossible to travel outside without a gas mask. The player will be tasked to relay information from one shelter to another due to a breakdown in the communication system that would eventually lead to the discovery of a conspiracy by the government in which the whole city is to be laid waste with nuclear bombs. The player would then need to find a way to escape the city

Don’t Escape 3

Gameplay:

The game is an adventure point and click which means that all actions involve moving the mouse only. Additionally, similar to most point and click games, Don’t Escape 3 highly emphasizes on its adventure aspect by allowing the player to solve puzzles.

The mechanics of the game is simple whereby the inventory is accessible by the top bar. There are multiple rooms that can be accessed by moving the cursor to the edge of the screen in the direction that you want to move to.Unlike most point and click game, Don’t Escape 3 contains a unique feature that gives the player certain flexibility in decision making. The game does have a linear storyline only up to a certain point whereby players will need to make certain choices that will affect the outcome of the gameplay. In order to aid the player to make decisions, messages are spread across different places in the game that will gives insights or explanations to the event that transpire throughout the course of the gameplay. Finally as a challenge, the game features “Life Support” which shows the number of hours left till the oxygen runs out and certain tasks will take up some time from the “Life Support”.

Graphics:

Unlike most point and click game, Don’t Escape 3 does not feature a high quality graphics overall. The game does however convey an eerie feel due to the darkened background and background noises. The game doesn’t focus on subtle details but every object that seems important are well placed and detailed enough for the players to see.

Storyline:

The player woke up to the sound of a computer counting down by which the player would need to deactivate the ejection procedure that would launch the player straight to space. After its deactivation, the player would be free to roam around between different compartments of the spaceship only to discover that every other member of the spaceship has been murdered by someone in a spacesuit. The player would then need to uncover the truth behind the whole incident and make some choices that would affect the outcome.
