Preview: UNMC Nations Cup 2016

UNMC’s largest sporting event is back, and it just got even better! The 2016 edition of UNMC Nations Cup kicks off on the 31st of October and will be in action all the way to the 11th of November. While events are normally held within the vicinity of UNMC’s Sports Complex, this year’s edition features a special venue — The Arcade Room. That’s right, billiards has just been included in the Nations Cup alongside archery and floorball! Calling out all sports fans to show your undivided support for your beloved teams in what promises to be an exciting showdown between nations!

Dubbed the Mini-Olympics of UNMC by the Student Association, this 10-day event will be showcasing plenty of sporting action, drama, as well as tension between contenders, as they compete in various individual and team sports events with a handful of medals up for grabs. The Nations Cup aims to promote healthy competition and sportsmanship among participants. More importantly, the winning nation will also enjoy bragging rights for a good whole year until the next Nations Cup commence!

Things are slightly different this year, as athletes will automatically be entered into a lucky draw where they will have a chance of winning various prizes as part of the Student Association’s initiative to reward athletes who put in their heart and soul in their respective events. On top of that, the inclusion of new sponsors such as retailing giants Sports Direct in the Nations Cup will see top athletes obtaining gift vouchers alongside their hard-fought medals.

So what to expect as a spectator? Worry not, as you will most certainly be entertained by the enthusiasm that these athletes have to offer. Take a look at IGNITE’s coverage of the previous Nations Cup to relive memorable moments such as the time when Team United Kingdom dramatically snatched away the top spot from defending champions Team Malaysia in the Rugby finals.

Strong favourites and current overall champion Malaysia will be looking to fend off all competition as they aim to bag in another Nations Cup title to add in to their already impressive collection. However, lets not jump the gun just yet as other nations will be putting on a fierce challenge for the prestigious crown with a much improved team as compared to previous years.

Do drop by the Sports Complex this coming Monday for the much-awaited opening ceremony. Clear up your schedule and spare some time to show your support for your favourite team!
