PROTECH Badminton Open 2018 in UNMC

The PROTECH Badminton Open 2018 took place on 27th and 28th January 2018 in the Sports Complex of University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. It was held by the Badminton club of UNMC and Protech. This tournament was open to public and any participant could register individually. The organizers of this event made a rule to not allow the national players, state players, and circuit players from 2014-2018 participate in this tournament. In this way, it gave all the players out there a motivation to play and win.

Brief Introduction of the Event

This was a big event for UNMC considering there were many participants from other Universities. The organizers brought certified first-aiders who stayed throughout the event. The parents, guardians, friends and loved ones of the participants filled the indoor badminton courts. The categories were male and female singles, male doubles and mixed doubles. The club members mentioned that they thought this event was going to be a nice way for students who like badminton to have fun after their exams.

 

Women Singles Finals

3rd & 4th Place

First, Elavarasi A/P Raju faced Ling Fung Ngik in the game to determine the third and fourth place. Elavarasi started leading the game while Ling Fung put up a strong front. The first set and second set ended with a win for Elavarasi having 21-9 and 21-11 consecutively. Elavarasi became the second runner up and got a RM 100 prize voucher along with a racquet bag.

1st & 2nd Place

Daphne Lim Yeeju faced off Temisha Vignes in the battle of championship. Daphne and Temisha showed their adeptness while they kept on playing to win. The first set ended with a win for Daphne with a score of 28-26 points. Temisha tried her best in the second set but Daphne managed to win the second set too. Daphne being the champion got a RM 400 prize voucher and a racket while Temisha being the first runner up received a RM 200 prize voucher and a racket.

Men Singles Finals

3rd & 4th Place

The finals for this category started off with the game of third and fourth place. Wan Wing Sheng was playing against Han Wing. Han Wing won the first set for 21-15. Wan Wing Sheng quickly picked up the pace in the second set and managed to win the second set for 21-18.  After a nerve-cracking third set Wan Wing Sheng won the third set and claimed his place for the second runner up. He received a RM 100 prize voucher along with a racket bag.

1st & 2nd Place

Wilson Ku faced off Chong Seng in the championship battle for Men Singles. Chong seemed to be a very good player and very motivated to win. He managed to beat Wilson Ku in both sets even though he put a competitive front. In the end, Chong was crowned champion and received a RM 400 prize voucher with a racket while Wilson Ku became the first runner up and received a RM 200 prize voucher with a racket bag.

Mixed Doubles Finals

3rd & 4th Place

Muhamad Akmal Halam Bin Yunus and Rabiyathladawiyan faced Wan Wing Sheng and Hew Ju Ve in the game to win the third place. Akmal and Rabiyath started leading the set while Wan Wing and Hew Ju fought back hard. After a very intense game of two sets, Akmal and Rabiyath managed to claim their place as second runner up and received a RM 160 prize voucher with racket bags.

1st & 2nd Place

Wilson Ku and Ng Yun Jia faced off Mohd Nur Helmi and Hidayati Mohd Yusof in the battle of championship. Helmi and Hidayati started leading the game but Wilson Ku and Ng Yun could not continue playing due to an injury. Hence, Mohd Nur Helmi and Hidayati became the champions and received a RM 600 prize voucher with rackets. Wilson Ku and Ng Yun Jia became the first runner up and received a RM 360 prize voucher with racket bags.

Men Doubles Finals

3rd & 4th Place

Mohd Nur Helmi and Ezzat Amin faced Kwong Kin Weng and Teoh Yong Jun in the game to claim the third place. Mohd Nur Helmi and Ezzat Amin won the first set after a very competitive match. Kwong Kin and Teoh Yong tried their best but Helmi and Ezzat still managed to win the second set. In the end, Helmi and Ezzat became second runner up and received a RM 160 prize voucher with racket bags.

1st & 2nd Place

Muhammad Akmal Hakim Bin Yunus and Bajit Singh faced off Oh Soon Keon and Khoo Chong Lei in the championship. The championship game took quite long as sets after sets were required to determine who would be the champion. The court was filled with people who wanted to know the outcome of this game. It was exciting as both the teams kept on winning but in the end, Akmal Hakim and Bajit Singh became the crowned champions. The champions received a RM 600 prize voucher and rackets while the first runner up got a RM 360 prize voucher and racket bags.

This event was a huge success and can be said the best Badminton Open tournament held so far. Last year there were 300 participants, but this year there were 380 participants. There was no serious injury throughout the whole two days. This event is the fruit of all of our club members joint effort.

Prize Giving

The event ended with prize giving ceremony. The organizer called out the names of the winners and a loud applause greeted them while they approached. All the winners were quite glad to receive the prizes and their friends clicked the pictures away. The indoor courts were filled with cheeriness and excitements on a Saturday night. The event concluded at 10 pm with handshakes and hugs.
